Changes in Dental Plaque and Bacteria by the Use of Toothpaste Containing Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate
Na Hee-Ja

Abstract
Objective: We investigated changes in dental plaque and bacteria by the use of toothpaste containing sodium hydrogen carbonate. The data generated will provide a basis for the development of toothpaste containing sodium hydrogen carbonate.

Methods: Sixty participants were selected from among the students and teaching staff of Honam University. The participants were divided into an experimental group with toothpaste containing sodium hydrogen carbonate (n=30), and a control group with general toothpaste (n=30). All subjects went through an oral examination (number of teeth and decay, missing, filling teeth), a plaque rate examination, and a bacteriological examination (bacillus, coccus, and spirochete) before the experiment. Examinations for additional plaque formation rate and bacteriology were performed after 1, 2, and 3 weeks. Comparative changes over time, and differences between groups were analyzed.

Results: Plaque formation rate, bacilli, and cocci, but not spirochetes, showed a statistically significant group-by-time interaction.

Conclusion: Toothpaste containing sodium hydrogen carbonate may possibly be recommended for the prevention of oral disease.
